Killing Them to Save Them

I would love to see the neo-con response to this criticism of their position leveled by Greenwald:

Much of the same faction now claiming such concern for the welfare of The Iranian People are the same people who have long been advocating a military attack on Iran and the dropping of large numbers of bombs on their country -- actions which would result in the slaughter of many of those very same Iranian People...

Missing here is a list of genocidal freaks given by Greenwald worth going to his post to see...

Imagine how many of the people protesting this week would be dead if any of these bombing advocates had their way -- just as those who paraded around (and still parade around) under the banner of Liberating the Iraqi People caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of them, at least. Hopefully, one of the principal benefits of the turmoil in Iran is that it humanizes whoever the latest Enemy is.

  1. Great to see you back exDLB.

The neocons are blaming Obama for the unrest and rioting in Iran after the fraudulent election.

    Surprise!

  2. Obama is doing the right thing by not allowing us to get involved in the Iranian election. The old Soviet Union didn't need our help. The Phillipines didn't need our help.

  3. I know nothing about what is going on in Iran, which probably puts me in the same boat as most people commenting on the situation. I'm quite sure that, as you say Truth, other countries can usually muddle through better without our help.

Shaw, congrats on the whooping the Sox are putting on the Yanks this year.

  4. The Right does start from a legitimate position: The Iranian regime is undemocratic, hostage to fundamentalist religious powerbrokers and is capable of being quite brutal. Nuclear proliferation is a legitimate concern, which all of share, although we have different ideas on how to confront it.

What the Right does wrong is it picks up and then drops the ethical dimension that it is the Iranian people who are in fact suffering...at their whim. They don't give a damn about oppressed Iranians when it comes to the nuclear issue. Then the Right retreats into a 1950's male fantasy of a simple world of evildoers who must be obliterated.

It's as if civilians are a kind of ideological Belgium or Poland, to be crushed as greater ideological powers go forth to fight their opponents on the opposite side, and to be used for propaganda value. Only the powers matter, not the little people.
'oh I'm sorry about your village, but it got in the way of my tank, so I had to level it'.

Obama at least proceeds from the position that turning a country toward a better direction demands that you at least ENGAGE with it.

What did Cheney say? "We don't talk to evil".
Great.... Eight whole years of leaving these people locked up in silence with pathological oppressors instead. And what it really comes down to is that the Right are lazy... No don't do the hard yards, boys, of raising humanitarian issues in the great game of forceful diplomacy.. just threaten to blow the fuckers up. The hardline Right credo: "never feel empathy for anyone, just use their suffering to call ALL of them evil".
