I'm writing to thank
Frank Fronhofer for alerting me to the
letter signed by Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford supporting the
banning of assault rifles. Reagan's position was that of Democrats today. He
stated, "I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen for
sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that
an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a
home." No, gunsplaining isn't necessary to tell me an AK-47 isn't a
machine gun. If you don't mind the countless lies of Donald Trump, I'm sure you
can grant Reagan a little literary license.
Of course, Reagan also treated immigrants humanely, didn't
start a trade war with the world because he practiced free trade and he
fashioned a cabinet that was competent and not filled with world-class
swindlers. His philosophy towards Russia was expressed by "Trust, but
verify" not just "Trust." He'd likely be a NeverTrumper and
therefore blacklisted in today's GOP. He saw America as a shining city on a
hill, not as carnage.
Thanks to Trump, Reagan looks better all the time. Considering that I was a Republican when he was President but I could never bring myself to vote for him, I'm not sure I'm all that happy about the improvement in his reputation. Also, thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog yesterday.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are plenty of things to criticize Reagan for and I have, but how far we've fallen when he starts to look good. He gave amnesty to immigrants. OTOH, he tried to starve people on welfare and definitely demonized them. And his cabinet certainly had it's share of creeps. All that would've ruined the tone of my letter, tho.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for coming by. I don't put up many posts. Mostly use the iphone and don't really find that conducive to posting. I do put my LTTEs up, tho, for posterity. It's my little scrapbook.
I couldn't blog if I had to use my smartphone. About all that's good for is Twitter and Facebook, and I still can't do all that I can on the latter that I can do on my desktop.
DeleteI understand. I have another blog where I post my saved comments.
I had a friend I used to blog with, Repsac, who kept a separate blog for comments because he'd have them moderated away at different sites. He called it What'd I Say.
DeleteI would say don't look for it. I just did a search and an annoying pop up ad came up saying it is for sale. Can't imagine what anyone would pay for a used blog.
Oh, I should add a link to explain the Republican spies crack at the end. The NRCC sent, or he was a volunteer I suspect, a teenager to spy on Tedra Cobb and got video of her saying she couldn't publicly say she'd ban assault weapons. Northern NY is fairly rural and folks like their shootin' arns so it's a big deal.
ReplyDeleteActually this explains much of the gist of the whole letter.
Link
Tnank you for the explanation. I would have had no idea what you were talking about if I hadn't missed it entirely the first time.
